Block Themes Hit a New Accessibility Milestone in the Directory
More than half of newly submitted block themes now meet accessibility-ready criteria on first review. Theme developers say the block markup did more of the work than they expected.

Theme review volunteers report a quiet milestone: a majority of new block theme submissions are landing closer to accessibility-ready on the first pass. Skip links, landmarks, and heading structure are showing up by default more often than they did in the classic era.
That does not mean the directory is suddenly a paradise. Color contrast still fails. Focus styles still vanish in “creative” headers. But the floor rose because templates are HTML you can inspect, not a maze of undocumented PHP hooks.
If you maintain a classic theme, this is not a dunk. It is a hint that the cheapest path to a better baseline may be a block theme rebuild rather than another patch on a walker you wrote in 2016.
