Translation Plugins Ship Language Switcher Blocks
The switcher is no longer a widget that hopes a classic theme still exists. A few vendors built a block that survives a header template part.

Language switchers that were widgets died quietly in block themes. Native blocks that respect the current template are the replacement, if they do not hard-code a flag PNG from 2011.
Ask whether hreflang still emits, and whether the switcher hides a language that has no published posts. Those are the tests. The rest is decoration.
