#48 – Mara Ellison on Leaving Marketplaces for Direct WordPress Work

Welcome to the Jukebox podcast from WP Taverm. I’m Alex Harlan. This week I’m talking with Mara Ellison about the slow fade of freelance WordPress work on public marketplaces, and what replaced it.

Mara has spent a decade taking WordPress jobs off bidding boards. In 2023 the volume started to drop. By 2025, she says, the remaining listings were either race-to-the-bottom rebuilds or AI-assisted “quick wins” that rarely survived a real discovery call.

We get into the mix of causes: clients who can now ship a first draft themselves, agencies that absorbed the mid-market, and a crowded field of generalists competing on hourly rate. Mara’s answer was not to chase cheaper work. She productized onboarding, published a public retainers page, and started showing up in contributor Slack rooms instead of proposal templates.

AI made her faster, which sounds like a gift until every competitor gets the same gift. The edge, she argues, is judgment: knowing which plugin not to install, which hosting claim to ignore, and when a WooCommerce catalog should stay boring. Direct clients pay for that judgment. Marketplaces still price the ticket, not the trip.
