If reviewers cannot read it, they cannot ship it. A few shops stopped treating tokens as a trade secret.

Minified theme.json is how you hide a mess. Unminified files are how a child theme author finds the spacing slug you actually used.
Licensing can still live in PHP the directory will not accept as encrypted. The tokens were never the secret. The support load was.
