Style variations used to be all-or-nothing palettes. Per-template overrides let a homepage go dark while the post template stays readable.
That is how real magazines work. It is also how you avoid a child theme for one black rectangle.
Theme authors should still ship a coherent default. Overrides are seasoning, not the meal.
